Late Spring Getaway – May and June in Barbados

Late Spring Getaway – May and June in Barbados

With family holidaymakers waiting for the schools to close in July, the late spring months of May and June are ideal for couples and groups of friends wanting to visit Barbados when it’s quieter and less expensive. You’ll have more of the island to yourself to enjoy the fabulous weather, glorious beaches and the exciting array of entertainment and unforgettable activities.

Fab holidays at reduced prices

The Barbados low season runs right from May to October, but by visiting outside of the school holidays in May and June, you can treat yourself to a first-class vacation at bargain prices. With lower demand for accommodation, you’ll be able to get exclusive villas and apartments for less than half the cost of going in high season. You’ll also find that many tourist attractions and restaurants have reduced prices at this time of the year.

What’s open in late spring?

Most resorts and activities are available right throughout the year, though occasionally some venues do use the low season as the time to carry out refurbishments. The island will be quieter though, so while this might mean the nightclubs aren’t bustling, you will have more space for yourself on the beaches, the best restaurants will have free tables and tours and activities will be less crowded.

Glorious spring weather

May and June are some of the warmest months in Barbados with temperatures averaging 28°C and highs of 31°C. This means you can expect around 9 hours of glorious sunshine every day and even the sea will be warm to swim in.

Late spring is also the start of the wet season in Barbados, so it can be a little humid and there’s a chance of a short shower. Tropical showers are short but heavy; it rains for around ten minutes and then the sun returns and it’s hot again. The average rainfall in May and June is still only 35mm a month, half that of the UK during the same period.

What to do in May and June

Fewer holidaymakers, shorter queues and cut-price deals make late spring the ideal time to enjoy the many places and activities Barbados has to offer. Soak up the sun on majestical beaches, like Mullins Beach, on the west coast, where, during May and June, the golden sands and crystal-clear waters are far less busy. There are also some amazing coves to be discovered along the coastline that you can have all to yourself.

On some of the more popular beaches, you’ll find lots of activities to do. There are exclusive beach clubs that will provide sun loungers, cold drinks and refreshments, and numerous water sports, including surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and jet skiing. You can snorkel with turtles, dive shipwrecks and reefs, take out a sailing boat, go for a catamaran tour or try your hand at deep-sea angling.

Barbados is also fantastic for sports lovers. There are several top-drawer golf courses, including the renowned par 72, 7,045-yard, Robert Trent Jr designed Royal Westmoreland course. The national game, cricket, is played right across the island and there’s plenty of chance for a game of tennis, cycling, jogging, polo, working out at the gym or even motorsports.

Late spring is a great time of the year to discover Barbados’ rich culture and history. There are lots of interesting art galleries, museums, music events and places of historical interest, including the Old Bridgetown UNESCO World Heritage Site, George Washington House (where Washington lived for a time) and the colonial delights of Speightstown.

Dining out is an essential element of a great holiday and there is exceptional cuisine on offer, whether in one of the many high-class restaurants, like The Cliff, Cin Cin or Fusion Rooftop, or in the street food shacks at the famous Oistins Friday Fish Fry. The latter is a must-see attraction for visitors. Here you’ll find genuine Bajan dishes aplenty, served up with delicious rum cocktails and live music to create a wonderful chilled-out party atmosphere. You can also browse the many arts and crafts stalls that will be open too.

Where to stay

With just 250 luxury villas, townhouses, and apartments set in 750 acres of lush tropical landscape,  late spring visitors can’t do better than to book a holiday at the luxury Barbados resort, Royal Westmoreland. Barbados’ most prestigious private resort, has everything you need for the perfect vacation.

Amenities include a championship-standard golf course with stunning views of the west coast, a state-of-the-art gym, flood-lit tennis courts, and various eateries, including the colonial-style Club House and a Beach Club at nearby Mullins Beach. Guests also have a housekeeper, private chef service, and a well-informed concierge that can tell you the best places to go, book activities, reserve restaurant tables, organize transport, and much more.
